What does a gynaecology oncologist do?

A Gynaecology Oncologist is a specialist who treats women with cancer of the reproductive organs. This includes cancers of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vulva, and fallopian tubes. Gynaecology Oncologists are trained in both gynaecology (the study of the female reproductive system) and oncology (the study of cancer). This means they are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of female reproductive cancers. Gynaecology Oncologists use a variety of diagnostic methods and surgical approaches. They also work closely with other specialists, such as advanced cancer surgeons, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, to provide the best possible care for their patients.

What diseases do gynaecologist oncologists treat?

Gynaecology Oncologists are also experienced in managing other benign conditions and diseases of the female reproductive organs, such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids.

Out-patient Hysteroscopy

This is a procedure in which a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope is inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. It can be performed in an outpatient setting, meaning that the patient does not need to stay overnight in a hospital. It is useful for diagnostic purposes as we can visualise the inside of the uterus, as well as take biopsies of the lining of the uterus and remove any small polyps that we might see. The camera that is used for this test is very small and the test is generally well tolerated by the patients. It is recommended to take some pain relief before the test and local anaesthetic can be used if required. The test takes approximately 20 minutes and patients can leave shortly after the test is completed. Recovery time is usually short, and most women are able to return to their normal activities within a day or two.
